Motorcycle Helmet Lock: 10 Safest Options

Motorcycle helmets are an essential piece of gear every biker should use for safety, but they are a big investment and can be vulnerable to theft. The motorcycle helmet lock is a relatively recent invention, and they are becoming more common as petty, opportunistic motor vehicle theft rises in some neighborhoods and cities.

When a scooter or motorcycle is on the street all day, and a helmet is too bulky to lug around, motorcycle helmet lock systems aren’t a luxury but a gear essential. We review ten motorcycle helmet lock systems and describe how they compare in features and locking mechanisms.

Product FAQ

Unlike bicycle locks, motorcycle locks are often small and compact. Most thefts of possessions like helmets are opportunistic, and once the thief sees a locking system, thoughts of larceny usually disappear. It is important to know, however, that small cable locks of 5 mm to 10 mm can be easily cut with the right tool.

 1. What Is a Motorcycle Helmet Lock?

Helmets are expensive items, and scooter riders and motorcycle riders usually wear them but don’t like to carry them around. Most riders attach their helmets to their bikes, and some bikes have locking mechanisms—but not all of them. For those who have no way to secure their helmet, a simple cable or carabiner lock will secure the helmet to the bike frame.

 2. Why Choose a Combo over a Key System?

Combination locks require no extra hardware, and it’s impossible to lose the key. Since most of us carry smartphones, the combo can be stored in the phone in case the motorcycle helmet lock is rarely used, so forgetting the lock combination is unlikely.

 3. What Types of Motorcycle Helmet Lock Systems Are Popular?

Four types of these locks exist: simple locking strap with a small clasp; carabiner lock; cable lock system; and hardware-mounted aftermarket locks. All of them except the last require no installation, are affordable, and work like most bicycle or locker locks.

 4. Where Can I Buy Helmet Locks?

The best place to find a good selection of motorcycle helmet locks is online. Some retail bike shops will carry them, but most brick and mortar stores will have a limited selection.

5. What’s the Advantage of a Carry Lock System over Hardware Installation?

If your bike doesn’t have a locking clasp where the helmet can be secured, it may be tempting to install one. However, carry locks have their advantages. Portable cables or carabiners can provide double-duty as locks for other situations, and if the bike is sold, you still have a lock. Chassis-mounted motorcycle locks can also be awkward to use.

6. Is There a Universal Lock I Can Mount on My Bike?

The two locks we review mount to most bikes, but neither is universal. The license plate lock works with all flat license plates and allows for a good helmet position as your helmet is kept out of sight. The best universal lock is a carry lock, whether carabiner, cable or some combo of the two.

The Verdict

Helmet locks aren’t a big expense, and riders should have a solution to avoid being stuck carrying around a burdensome helmet—or worse, accidentally leaving it somewhere. Leaving your helmet on the bike without locking it is a bad idea because the investment runs upwards of $300 for a decent helmet and finding one that fits takes time.

There are two locks on this list we feel stand out. For those with flat license plates, the DIY install of a license plate lock is a great idea; it hides the helmet well while also preventing the helmet from being stolen. For a carry lock, we prefer the HelmetLok 4101 Rubberized for its simplicity as a carabiner combination lock.

If you aren’t sure of our two picks for helmet locks, know each lock on our list made the top-ten for a reason, and any of them will serve you well.
